Question by : My son have been diagnoised with obustructive sleep apanea, and Dr have asked us to take of the adnenoids?
us to remove Tonsils and adenoids and also he is planning to do turbinates to create more room for breathing, my only question and concern is He never really saw the size of adenoids or tonsils, and is assuming those are causing sleep apnea(moderate).. I am worried what if surgery does not help, My son would not like CPAP. as he is just 3 years and 3 months…. Please advice

Get a second opinion. Did the doctor do a sleep study test on your son to determine he does have sleep apnea? He would have to be an inpatient for one night. My 4 year old daughter snores at night and has huge tonsils but her pediatrician told me my daughter needs recurrent infections in her tonsils like 5 in one year and wait another year before a decision is made. So far she’s had only 2 infections. I only recommend that if your son is having trouble breathing at night then you need to reconsider for his safety. I hear that it’s better to have the tonsils taken out while they are young. The adenoids removal is not as bad as having tonsils removed. The younger the child the faster they heal. You should rest assure that surgery will help. Good luck

Ahhh…that sleep apnea is overrated.I would get another opinion.
If you are at all in doubt,I would not follow through with it at all.
He is so young still. And who doesn’t have sleep apnea. They will tell just about every person that comes in for a study.
Having tonsils removed was a thing of the past. You can now read a lot of Doctors are telling patients not to have them removed unless they are a real threat.
Tonsils help the immune system in a great way.
I would wait it out and get another opinion.
Has he been tested for asthma?

Second opinion? We removed my sons tonsils after repeated infections, very large tonsils, bad snoring, sometimes he would have a short breath while sleeping. I’m glad we did it though. He sleeps hell of a lot better, does not snore, results were imminent, he hasn’t had an infection since! Anyways u could get a different opinion. We were reffered and the doc did look at his throat etc did tests.

I totally understand how you feel. My daughter has recurrent tonsilitis and we were also told that she may be advised to undergo a tonsillectomy if it ever got in the way with her breathing. She is not bothered a lot by tonsilitis now but I have noticed that she has trouble breathing at night. I am already entertaining that she will need the operation anytime soon.
If your doctor suggests an operation and you are not at ease with his suggestion, you can get a second opinion. But if it the doctor will suggest an operation, I think it would be safer for your son to undergo it if it could address his sleep apnea. I know it’s a difficult decision to make so ask questions from your doctor so that you can make an informed choice. I wish you the best.

The cpap can be used temporarily until a surgical fix is done.
