Question by lpdunit107: sleep apnea CPAP and dry mouth?
I’m new to using a Cpap and am having a horrible time. I cant get it seated right, so it leaks and whistles. Then even though it has a humidifier. It doesn’t last all night so I wake up with terrible dry mouth. My tongue was stuck to my lips and I couldn’t swallow last time. Any one have any ideas to help me adjust. As it is I unconsciously remove it after a couple hrs. Help , they say I’m a severe case.

I would also use a Humidifier in your room so the general air in your room is moister as well. Also, make sure your are hydrated internally as in get plenty of liquids before and have some water at your bedside. I always keep some handy for a sip or 2 in the night.
I have used a CPAP machine for 7 years and you are right, it takes a while to get used to it. Have you talked to the people you got it from about the troubles you are having? There may be an adjustment you can make to keep it from leaking and whistling.
I also have taken it off in the middle of the night then wake myself up snoring! LOL Good luck. I can tell you honestly that it is worth it to keep working at getting it adjusted. I get more sleep with the CPAP in 4 hours than I did without it in 8 hours.

I use a Resmed machine and learned quickly, I had to teach my whole body to use the machine. I make sure I am clean shaven prior to putting the mask on, no aftershave because it can mess with the seal. :Look at your humidifier bowl, there is a maximum line to fill with distilled water. Fill it up a little more that minimum. You can also adjust some of the settings. Are you adjusting the straps each time or are you using the adjustments set by the sleep clinic? I set mine after it Ramps up to my sleep setting of 15. I was supplied a head strap to wear to keep my mouth closed during sleep and make me breath through my nose. I also sleep in one position , on my back with the ability to move side to side. I purchased a CPAP pillow for the medical supply store .

If you are having problems with the seal then you need to call the home medical group that you received your CPAP through they can come out to your home and see if there is something wrong with the device and exchange it for a new one. With the humidity it could be due to the device not having a tight enough seal and more humidity is escaping than what should be.
